Owl Nap or Play Mat

One of my top secret projects can now be shared! This owl mat was a gift to my little sis at her baby shower. She is a huge lover of owls so this was a no-brainer when I saw the inspiration pic :) I got busy and created a pattern and picked out fabrics from my stash. I used two layers of quilt batting to give it a bit more cushion, and stuffed the wings and feet with polyfill. In hindsight I kind of wish I had just used quilt batting for those too. Either way, I'm pretty happy with how it came out and love this combination of colors.

  1. Do you have a pattern for this beautiful owl? I'd love to make one but would like a pattern to follow or even sizes.

    1. I don't have a pattern, sorry! I just winged it based on this inspiration image: http://kikiandco.com/item_173/Boy-Owl-Nap-Mat.htm
Let me know if you give it a shot!

  2. when you use quilt batting is it still easily washable?? My first grandchild will be here soon and I'm in love with this but want to make sure it can be washed easily and without losing shape or clumping- I'm a novice with this kind of stuff so pardon me if it's a silly question:)

    1. Since I gave this one as a gift and it's the only one I've made, I can't give this a definitive answer. I think there would be a bit of shrinking of the batting for sure and would recommend not putting it in the dryer. I did pre-wash this one (hung to dry) and pressed it before gifting (mainly because I left raw edges around the eyes and wanted them to fray a bit), I didn't have any problems. If I make one of these again I would probably do a stitch in the ditch method and attach the front to the batting in this method before adding the backing. Good luck

  3. Could you share how much fabric you used for each part?
